"Never Dim Your Light"

Excerpt from Chapter 1:

   "Tears starting to roll down her cheeks, "Mother, I'm not dirty. I'm not a bad person. I ain't never done nothing to nobody. Why're people treating me so bad?" Sobbing hard, she slid down the door frame to the floor.  Grandmother, still on her knees, crawled over to her and took her in her arms to rock her as she would do whenever there was anything wrong with one of her children.

     Rubbing her face clear of the tears, Grandmother told Mama that "Sometimes some folks don't think about the things they say to other folks; don't think about how they're treating you; they just think on what they feel; It's their own inside that they worry about; never took the time to know you or what kind of person you really are.  If they did they'd know you're a sweet girl that just fell in love with the wrong man at the wrong time and made a foolish mistake, and that's all.  Oh Shoot, I bet that by the time the baby comes all those same folks'll be wanting to see it". Mama indignantly replied, "My baby ain't no peep show". "Now, don't you talk like that," Grandmother said. "Babies just got a way of melting folks hearts and reminding 'em to love 'em. Babies are special little beings.  The Bible says, "Heaven is like these."
